Cyperus catnip, or Cyperus alternifolius, belongs to the Cyperaceae family. This semi-aquatic plant is native to Madagascar where it grows naturally in wetlands. This catnip has a height of up to two meters and has bright green evergreen foliage.
The stem of this plant is strong, somewhat triangular, and bears alternate leaves, hence its Latin name. The leaves are long and end in a cluster of smaller leaves that resemble an umbrella, hence its other common name, the Umbrella Plant.
The flowers of Cyperus catnip are in clusters of 10 to 20 and are greenish-white in color. This plant also has fibrous roots and a creeping rhizome, which allows it to spread effectively in its natural environment.
Cyperus catnip is not only appreciated for its decorative aspect but also for its beneficial effect on cats who, by consuming it, can benefit from digestive support.
