Lavender selection guide for your garden

Choosing your lavender depends on your region and intended use. Lavandula angustifolia (true lavender) is the hardiest, resistant down to -15°C, ideal for fragrances and infusions. Lavandula stoechas (butterfly lavender) offers spectacular flowering but fears frost. For borders, choose compact varieties like 'Hidcote' or 'Munstead'. Hybrid lavenders like 'Grosso' produce more essential oil. All prefer well-draining soil and sunny exposure. In pots, select dwarf varieties for balconies and terraces.

Everything you need to know about growing lavender

Planting and exposure

Lavender thrives in full sun with a minimum of 6 hours daily exposure. It tolerates partial shade but flowers less generously. Soil must be well-draining, preferably chalky, with a pH between 6.5 and 8. Avoid heavy, wet soils that promote root rot. Plant from March to May or September to October, spacing plants 40 to 80 cm apart depending on variety.

Maintenance and pruning

Watering should be moderate: lavender tolerates drought better than excess water. Pruning occurs after flowering, cutting faded flower stems and evening out the plant shape. More severe spring pruning rejuvenates old plants. Remove dead wood and aerate the plant center.

Properties and uses

Recognized for its soothing and antiseptic properties, lavender is used in infusions, essential oil or scented sachets. It attracts bees and butterflies while naturally repelling harmful insects. Flowers are harvested in the morning after dew evaporation, at the beginning of flowering for optimal fragrance.

Questions fréquentes

Which lavender should I choose for my garden?

For cold regions, choose Lavandula angustifolia which resists down to -15°C. In Mediterranean regions, all varieties are suitable. For borders, opt for compact varieties like 'Hidcote' or 'Munstead'.

How to plant lavender in a pot?

Use a pot at least 30 cm in diameter with drainage. Mix potting soil, sand and gravel. Place in full sun and water moderately. Dwarf varieties are perfect for container growing.

When and how to prune lavender?

Prune after flowering by cutting faded flower stems. In spring, perform more substantial pruning while keeping a few centimeters of previous year's wood. Never prune into old wood.

My lavender isn't flowering, why?

Lack of sunlight, soil too rich in nitrogen, or overwatering can prevent flowering. Lavender needs light water stress and poor soil to flower well.

Does lavender attract bees?

Yes, lavender is an excellent bee plant. It attracts bees, bumblebees and butterflies while naturally repelling mosquitoes and other harmful insects, creating a beneficial garden balance.

Can all lavenders be used in cooking?

Only Lavandula angustifolia is recommended for culinary and therapeutic use. Other varieties, richer in camphor, are better suited for perfumery and decoration.
