Guide to choosing your seasonal bulbs

The choice of your bulbs depends on the desired planting period and flowering time. Spring bulbs such as tulips, daffodils and crocuses are planted in autumn to flower from February to May. Summer bulbs such as dahlias, gladiolus and lilies are planted in spring for summer flowering.

Consider your garden's exposure: sun-loving bulbs like tulips prefer sunny locations, while some like cyclamens tolerate partial shade. Hardiness is also important: check that your bulbs can withstand the temperatures in your region. Finally, vary the heights and colors to create harmonious flower beds and stagger blooms over several months.

Everything you need to know about seasonal bulbs to plant

Different types of bulbs by season

Bulbs are divided into two main categories according to their planting period. Spring-flowering bulbs are planted from September to December: tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, crocuses and muscari. These bulbs need a period of winter cold to flower. Summer-flowering bulbs are planted from March to May: dahlias, gladiolus, tuberous begonias and lilies. More sensitive to cold, they are planted after the last frosts.

Optimal planting techniques

Planting depth follows the general rule: 3 times the height of the bulb. In heavy soil, plant less deep; in sandy soil, plant deeper. Spacing varies by species: 5-10 cm for small bulbs, 15-20 cm for large ones. Make sure the soil is well-drained as bulbs fear excess moisture which can cause rot.

Care and storage

After flowering, allow the foliage to yellow naturally to rebuild the bulb's reserves. Water moderately during growth, then stop watering once the foliage has faded. Hardy bulbs can remain in the ground, while frost-sensitive bulbs like dahlias must be dug up and stored dry over winter.

Garden associations and uses

Create naturalistic flower beds by mixing different varieties with the same flowering period. Bulbs pair perfectly with perennials and shrubs, adding color and structure to gardens. In planters, favor dwarf varieties and ensure good drainage. Bulbs also allow you to create spectacular wildflower meadows by naturalizing them in the lawn.

Questions fréquentes

When to plant flower bulbs?

Spring-flowering bulbs are planted in autumn (September to December), while summer-flowering bulbs are planted in spring (March to May) after the last frosts.

How deep should bulbs be planted?

Follow the rule of 3 times the bulb's height. For example, a 4 cm tulip bulb should be planted 12 cm deep. Adjust according to soil type: less deep in heavy soil, deeper in sandy soil.

How to store bulbs after flowering?

Allow the foliage to yellow naturally to rebuild reserves. Hardy bulbs remain in the ground, frost-sensitive bulbs like dahlias are dug up and stored dry in a cool, well-ventilated place.

Can bulbs rebloom for several years?

Yes, most bulbs are perennial and will reflower each year if conditions are optimal. Apply a bulb-specific fertilizer after flowering to promote their longevity.

What soil is best for bulbs?

Well-drained soil is essential as bulbs fear excess moisture. Loose, organic-rich soil with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH suits most species.

How to protect bulbs from rodents?

Use wire baskets when planting or sprinkle dried blood powder around the bulbs. Imperial fritillary bulbs have a naturally repellent odor for rodents.

Can bulbs be forced indoors?

Yes, some bulbs such as hyacinths, tulips and daffodils can be forced in pots. Keep them cool for 12-16 weeks, then gradually expose them to warmth and light for winter flowering.
