Hellebores, nicknamed Christmas roses, offer exceptional winter blooms. To choose well, first consider the exposure: these plants prefer partial shade and dread direct sunlight.

The Helleborus niger (Christmas rose) blooms from December with its immaculate white flowers. The Helleborus orientalis (Lenten rose) offers a wider palette: white, pink, purple or nearly black, with flowering from February to April.

For shaded borders, opt for compact varieties like 'Christmas Carol'. Corsican hellebores suit large spaces with their impressive flower stems. All appreciate well-drained soil and slightly chalky conditions.

Planting and Optimal Location

Hellebores thrive in neutral to slightly alkaline soil (pH 6.5 to 8), rich in humus and perfectly drained. Absolutely avoid heavy, wet soil that causes root rot. Planting is best done in autumn, allowing good root establishment before winter flowering.

The ideal exposure remains bright partial shade, beneath deciduous trees for example. This situation recreates their natural woodland habitat.

Specialized Care and Maintenance

Once established, hellebores require minimal intervention. Remove damaged foliage in late winter to showcase the blooms. Caution: never cut green foliage, as it ensures the photosynthesis necessary for the plant.

An organic mulch (fallen leaves, compost) maintains soil moisture and gradually nourishes the plant. Apply balanced fertilizer in spring, after flowering.

Propagation and Remarkable Varieties
