How to choose your photinia

Photinia comes in several varieties to meet all your landscaping needs. The Photinia Red Robin remains the most popular with its spectacular scarlet young shoots and vigorous growth, ideal for hedges of 2 to 4 meters.

For more restricted spaces, opt for dwarf varieties such as Photinia Little Red Robin, perfect in containers or for low hedges. The Photinia Pink Marble offers original variegated pink and cream foliage.

Consider your site's exposure: photinia prefers sun to partial shade to develop its most beautiful colors. Also check available space as some varieties can reach 3 meters wide at maturity.

Planting and optimal location

Photinia thrives in all well-drained soil types, with a preference for slightly acidic to neutral soil. Plant preferably in autumn or spring, avoiding frost periods. For a dense hedge, space plants 80 cm to 1 meter apart.

Ideal exposure combines morning sun and protection from cold winds. In regions with harsh winters, choose a sheltered location to preserve the persistent foliage.

Pruning and maintenance

Pruning occurs twice yearly: light pruning after flowering in May-June to stimulate new colored shoots, and shape pruning in late summer. Avoid severe pruning that would compromise spring flowering.

Regular watering the first year promotes rooting. Once established, photinia tolerates temporary drought well.

Recommended varieties

The Red Robin dominates the market for its hardiness down to -15°C and vibrant red shoots. The Pink Marble adds originality with variegated foliage. For small spaces, compact varieties like Little Red Robin or Carre Rouge offer the same ornamental qualities in a reduced format.
