Geraniums come in several varieties with specific uses. Zonal geraniums form compact clumps ideal for flower beds and planters. Their colorful flowers resist heat well and require minimal maintenance.

Ivy geraniums offer a trailing habit perfect for hanging baskets and window boxes. Their flexible stems create magnificent cascading blooms. Scented geraniums seduce with their fragrant foliage and insect-repellent properties.

Choose a sunny to partially shaded location and well-draining soil. Most varieties tolerate temperatures down to -2°C, allowing extended cultivation into autumn.

Planting and optimal soil

Geraniums thrive in light, well-draining potting soil. Mix geranium compost, sand, and organic matter in equal proportions. The ideal pH is between 6.0 and 7.0. In garden beds, amend heavy soils with coarse sand to prevent waterlogging, the main cause of root rot.

Light exposure and controlled watering

These Mediterranean plants appreciate 6 to 8 hours of daily sunlight. Excessive shade promotes foliage development at the expense of flowering. Water moderately but regularly, allowing the soil to dry between waterings. Avoid wetting the foliage to prevent fungal diseases.

Fertilizing and pruning

Apply fertilizer rich in phosphorus and potassium every two weeks during the growing period. Regularly remove spent flowers to encourage new buds. In late autumn, cut back to 10 cm from the ground to promote spring regrowth.
