Choosing the right geranium for your needs
Geraniums come in several varieties with specific uses. Zonal geraniums form compact clumps ideal for flower beds and planters. Their colorful flowers resist heat well and require minimal maintenance.
Ivy geraniums offer a trailing habit perfect for hanging baskets and window boxes. Their flexible stems create magnificent cascading blooms. Scented geraniums seduce with their fragrant foliage and insect-repellent properties.
Choose a sunny to partially shaded location and well-draining soil. Most varieties tolerate temperatures down to -2°C, allowing extended cultivation into autumn.
Expert guide: succeeding with geranium plants
Planting and optimal soil
Geraniums thrive in light, well-draining potting soil. Mix geranium compost, sand, and organic matter in equal proportions. The ideal pH is between 6.0 and 7.0. In garden beds, amend heavy soils with coarse sand to prevent waterlogging, the main cause of root rot.
Light exposure and controlled watering
These Mediterranean plants appreciate 6 to 8 hours of daily sunlight. Excessive shade promotes foliage development at the expense of flowering. Water moderately but regularly, allowing the soil to dry between waterings. Avoid wetting the foliage to prevent fungal diseases.
Fertilizing and pruning
Apply fertilizer rich in phosphorus and potassium every two weeks during the growing period. Regularly remove spent flowers to encourage new buds. In late autumn, cut back to 10 cm from the ground to promote spring regrowth.
Overwintering and propagation
In regions with harsh winters, bring your geraniums indoors to a frost-free, bright but cool location (5-10°C). Drastically reduce watering. Propagation by stem cuttings is easily done in September, guaranteeing plants identical to the mother plant.

Questions fréquentes
When to plant geraniums outdoors?
Plant your geraniums after the last frosts, generally from mid-May onwards. These plants fear cold and cannot tolerate prolonged freezing temperatures.
Why aren't my geraniums flowering?
Insufficient sunlight, excess nitrogen, or overly moist soil can inhibit blooming. Place them in a sunny location and reduce watering while removing excess foliage.
How to overwinter geraniums?
Bring them indoors before the first frosts into a bright location maintained between 5 and 10°C. Reduce watering and cut stems back to 10 cm. Gradually resume care in spring.
Are geraniums toxic to pets?
Geraniums can be mildly toxic to cats and dogs if ingested in large quantities. Monitor your pets and consult a veterinarian if symptoms appear.
What's the difference between geranium and pelargonium?
The term geranium commonly refers to pelargoniums, plants of African origin. True geraniums are hardy perennial plants. Pelargoniums offer more spectacular and colorful blooms.
How to propagate geraniums?
Stem cuttings remain the simplest method. Take 10 cm stems in September, remove lower leaves, and place them in a sand-peat mixture. Rooting occurs in 3 to 4 weeks.
My geraniums have yellow leaves, what should I do?
Yellow leaves generally indicate overwatering or nutrient deficiency. Check soil drainage and apply balanced fertilizer. Remove damaged leaves to encourage recovery.
