MAINTENANCE
WATERING
It is ideal towater the Calathea when the surface pot begins to dry. You can also water it in small doses regularly and keep the soil fresh.
These tropical plants do not like water limestone, it is generally recommended to usewater distilled orrainwater to room temperature for spray or water.
Tap water will not kill them but may cause browning of the leaves on their tips.
You can use fertilizer liquid for indoor plants, rich in trace elements in small doses from April to October.
CLEANING AND SIZING
It is important to clean their leaves regularly, the dust that settles on them can become an obstacle to photosynthesis.. It is also necessary toailer the leaves that dry out, turn yellow or brown. Cut cleanly at the base of the stem using pruning shears. This essential maintenance action limits the appearance of insects and spiders.
POTTING, CUTTINGS, DIVISION
POTTING
You can repot your Calathea if its roots come out from the bottom of the pot, if they start to appear from above or if they are thick and matted.
You can use potting soil for green plants, and possibly lighten it a little with perlite.
CUTTINGS | DIVISION
Calathea are rhizomaticplants, and therefore do not take cuttings.
You can however divide a large Calathea by separating the stems and rhizomes, for this you should not hesitate to use a knife to separate the plants.
FREQUENT PROBLEMS
The leaves turn yellow, the tips of the leaves are yellow.
If your Calathea just won't shed its older, smaller leaves, this is likely caused by excess water. Space out your waterings by a day or two and be careful not to leave the bottom of the pot bathed in water.
The leaves roll up on themselves. The tips of the leaves are brown.
This can be caused by too dry air or insufficient or irregular watering. To remedy this, you can for example place your Calathea in a bathroom, or group it with other plants.
