How to choose your olive tree
Choosing your olive tree depends above all on your space and climate conditions. For gardens, prioritize hardy varieties such as Aglandau or Picholine, resistant down to -15°C. In a pot on a terrace, opt for more compact varieties.
Consider the adult size: a young olive tree of 50 cm can reach several meters in open ground. Exposure is crucial: these Mediterranean trees require full sun and well-drained soil. Century-old or multi-century-old olive trees bring immediate character to the garden, while young plants allow you to shape the tree according to your taste.
For olive production, prioritize self-fertile varieties or plant several varieties to promote cross-pollination.
Expert guide: growing olive trees successfully
Planting and optimal location
The olive tree thrives in south or southwest exposure, sheltered from cold winds. The soil must be imperatively well-drained - excess moisture is the main enemy of these trees. In regions with harsh winters, choose a protected location or grow in a container for winter shelter.
Planting is ideally done in spring, after frosts. Dig a hole three times wider than the root ball and amend with gravel or sand if your soil is heavy.
Maintenance and pruning
The olive tree requires little maintenance once established. Watering is only necessary in the first year and during prolonged drought. Mineral mulch helps retain moisture.
Pruning is done after frosts, in late winter. Remove dead wood, crossing branches and open up the center. Olive trees tolerate severe pruning and regrow vigorously.
Fruiting and harvest
Fruiting generally begins around 4-5 years. For optimal production, apply olive-specific fertilizer in spring. Olives are harvested from September to December depending on varieties and desired use.

Questions fréquentes
Which olive tree to choose for a cold climate?
Prioritize hardy varieties such as Aglandau, Picholine or Bouteillan, resistant down to -15°C. Avoid pure Mediterranean varieties like Lucques in cold regions.
Can you grow an olive tree in a pot?
Absolutely! Choose a container of at least 50 liters with drainage holes. Use well-draining soil mix and bring the pot indoors in case of prolonged frost below -10°C.
When and how to prune an olive tree?
Prune in late winter, after frosts. Remove dead wood, open up the center and shorten overly long branches. The olive tree tolerates pruning well, even severe pruning.
My olive tree doesn't produce olives, why?
Several possible causes: tree immaturity (wait until 4-5 years), lack of sunlight, excess nitrogen or absence of pollinator for certain self-sterile varieties.
How to protect my olive tree from cold?
Mulch the base, protect the trunk with winter protection cloth if necessary. In a pot, move to a cool, bright location. Olive trees resist dry cold better than winter humidity.
What exposure for an olive tree?
Full sun essential! The olive tree needs at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. Avoid north-facing exposures and areas too windy and cold.
Do you need to water a planted olive tree?
Water regularly the first year to promote root establishment. After that, the olive tree tolerates drought very well. Excess water is more harmful than lack of water.
