How to take care of your succulents ?
Taking care of your succulents or fat plants is easy, provided you understand their needs and follow a few instructions.
Ideal for beginners or the forgetful, succulents are very undemanding in terms of water and light and require little maintenance. In short, perfect for novices because their fleshy leaves constitute a real water reserve that the plant will draw on as and when it needs it. So don't worry if you forget to water.
Native to the Southern Hemisphere, they like heat, have low water requirements and require a light and well-draining substrate, composed of half sand and half potting soil for green plants. You can also lighten the soil with perlite, volcanic rock or fine gravel.
In the summer, from spring to the end of summer, outdoor exposure to the sun or partial shade is preferable, knowing that shade can also suit them. Take care to acclimatize them gently to the sun's rays by gradually increasing the exposure time each day, otherwise the sun risks burning the leaves and irreparable brownish spots will appear.
When it comes to watering, nothing could be simpler: let nature take its course. Bad weather will cover its water needs, except during heatwaves when succulents will appreciate a one-off addition. In autumn and winter, you have three options. With their leaves full of water, succulents are frost-sensitive and can suffer from frost in a single night. A few precautions should therefore be taken :
- – Either you bring them indoors as soon as the first frosts appear, and you water them moderately once a month only, allowing the excess water to drain well.
- – Either you leave them outside “dry”, that is to say sheltered from bad weather and covered with a wintering veil all winter.
- – Either you put them away in a frost-free room, without watering until next spring, when you will take them outside again to enjoy the sun and spring rains for a gentle awakening.
Finally, if you have any doubts, just keep in mind that " Cacti prefer to be forgotten than overwatered.
