Beginners' Guide: Dividing Houseplants
At what is the division for ? What is the ideal period ? In this article we give you some advice and the steps to follow to proceed easily divide your plant, so follow the guide !
What is division ?
When a plant grows too quickly and emits numerous sprouts at the periphery, it is necessary to divide it !
Division consists of separating the rejects of the mother plant and replanting them individually in order to obtain identical ones.
Besides a real saving which allows you to preserve your plant but also to obtain other younger, robust and vigorous plants, and this, more quickly.
This method is mainly aimed at perennial plants.
What are the signs ?
- Your plant is cramped in its pot / its foliage is overflowing and taking up too much space
- Your plant is flowering less and less
What is the ideal time to divide your plant ?
The most favorable period is at the end of winter, when vegetation resumes. You can combine this operation with repotting (because we change the pot to access the root ball and the roots).
Warning : it is not recommended to do this every year but every 3-4 years.
How to divide ?
Materials required :
- A large container (depending on the size of your plant)
- Several
POTS - A pair of scissors (if the sheets are dense)
- Clay balls / potting soil (if you wish to repot at the same time)
- And to finish your hands ! :)

Prepare to divide your plant:
1. Carefully unpot the plant, then place it in a large container or on your table.

2. Separate the shoots, if your plant is too dense it is easier to cut them using a pair of scissors so as not to damage or tear off the different parts.

3. Once cut, collect the discards and put them aside.

Proceed with repotting of your mother plant :
4. Place a layer of clay balls at the bottom of the pot.

5. Cover with potting soil then pack with your fingers.
6. Form a hole using your fingers then place your plant delicately.
Proceed to divide the new plants:
7. Take the rejects put aside previously, equip yourself with small
