Monstera Monkey Leaf Care

Entretien Monstera Monkey Leaf - La Green Touch
The Monstera Monkey Leaf, also known as Monstera adansonii, is a popular houseplant valued for its heart-shaped leaves with distinctive incisions.  Here are some valuable tips for caring for your houseplant.

1. Watering

Water your Monstera Monkey Leaf when the soil feels dry to the touch. To determine the condition of the soil, you can insert your finger 2-3cm deep. If the soil feels damp, you can wait before watering your plant. If it feels dry, it is time to water it. Make sure not to let the plant sit in standing water, as this can cause root rot. In general, it is best to water less frequently in the winter when the plant is dormant.

2. Repotting

Repot your Monstera Monkey Leaf when the roots become cramped in their current pot. This can happen every 2-3 years. Use a well-draining soil mix for houseplants, as this plant does not like soggy soil.

3. Brightness

Monstera Monkey Leaf prefers bright indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, as this can burn the leaves. Place the plant near an east or west-facing window, or use a curtain to filter out direct light if necessary. Make sure the room temperature remains relatively constant, between 18°C and 24°C, to encourage your plant to grow. Avoid cold drafts and places where the temperature can drop below 10°C.

4. Common problems

The Monstera Monkey Leaf, like many houseplants, can encounter various problems. Here are some of the most common problems you might face when caring for this plant:
  • Root rot : Overwatering or soil that retains too much moisture can lead to root rot. Symptoms include yellowing leaves, limp leaves, and drooping of the plant. To prevent this problem, be sure not to let water pool in the pot saucer and to water only when the soil is dry on top.
  • Scale insects, aphids and red spiders : Insect infestations can damage the leaves of the Monstera Monkey Leaf. Monitor your plant regularly for signs of infestation, such as sticky spots, spider webs, or leaf deformation. Treat infestations with appropriate insecticides or by using biological control methods.
  • Yellow or brown leaves : Yellow or brown leaves can indicate a variety of problems, including overwatering, lack of nutrients, or inadequate lighting. Be sure to maintain proper watering, fertilize the plant regularly, and provide adequate light.
  • Tearing or shredding leaves :Monstera Monkey Leaf leaves are known for their tearing, but if they show excessive tearing or shredding, it could be due to rough handling or strong air currents.
  • Slow growth : If your plant doesn't seem to be growing as expected, it may be lacking nutrients. Provide a balanced houseplant fertilizer during the growing season to stimulate growth.
  • Mold Problems : An environment that is too humid can promote mold growth on the soil or leaves of the Monstera Monkey Leaf.Ensure that humidity is maintained at an appropriate level and that air circulation is adequate.
